First They Took His Legs and Then His Life: The Story of Palestinian Activist Ibrahim Abu Thuraya

“This is our land. We are not going to give up”. These were the last words of Ibrahim, an amputee who lost his legs in an Israeli airstrike in 2008. He was shot dead by an Israeli sniper on Friday.

Ibrahim Abu Thuraya was the name for courage against Israeli oppression in Occupied Palestine. The 29 year old wheelchair bound was a double amputee who lost his legs in an Israeli airstrike during Operation Cast Lead in 2008. And as an Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy, puts it - Israeli forces finished the ‘job’ on Friday as a sharpshooter aimed at his head and shot him dead. Ibrahim was still on his wheelchair when the Israeli bullet took his life.

He, along with hundreds of other Palestinians were protesting against the US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise the Jerusalem as Israeli capital.

“Abu Thuraya posed no danger to anyone. How much of a danger could a double amputee in a wheelchair, imprisoned behind a fence, constitute?” questions Levy. “How much evil and insensitivity does it take in order to shoot a handicapped person in a wheelchair?”

Ibrahim’s life and death are reflections of what every Palestinian in Gaza go through. Gaza is the world's biggest cage. Every life in the small strip of land is under the Israeli crosshair -snipers, artillery, fighter aircrafts- ready shoot.
