New Delhi: Amid the din of campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, a panel backed by CPI(M) and Congress swept the Tripura Bar Association polls, the largest lawyers’ body in the North-Eastern state. The panel defeated the ruling alliance panel -- BJP-Tipra Motha’s Aainjebi Unnayan Mancha. As many as 463 out of 500 members cast their votes.

The results of the polls, announced on Sunday, saw the victory of Mrinal Kanti Biswas from Congress and Koushik Indu from Communist party of India (Marxist), who fought jointly under the banner of the Save Constitution Forum or Songbidhan Bachao Mancha, as of president and secretary. The panel also won a majority in the 15-member executive. Both the parties are part of the Opposition INDIA bloc.

Congratulating the Save Constitution Panel for its victory, CPI(M) state secretary and former MP Jitendra Choudhary and Congress leader Ashis Kumar Saha said the victory was a precursor to the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“Despite several tactics and allurements to the lawyers, the ruling party (BJP) panel faced defeat with a humiliating margin. This shows the people of Tripur do not want BJP anymore. We are expecting similar results in Lok Sabha polls if the ECI can hold free and fair elections,” Choudhary was quoted in the Times of India.
