Founder of the Naya Theatre in Bhopal, man who devoted his entire life to theater, Habib Tanvir leaving behind his great work and passion for the arts, passed away on Monday morning at National Hospital, Bhopal. He was suffering from respiratory problems for the past few weeks when Kidney failure worsened his condition. Tanvir was an Inspiration for many aspiring actors, directors and even poets. Even at 85 his ideas and beliefs were young and encouraging. His humor,  energy and enthusiasm never ceased to amaze us. Agra Bazar and Charandas Chor are few amongst the many popular plays written by him. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969, Padma Shri in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002. Tanvir was also nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha (1972-1978). His play “Charandas Chor” got him the Fringe Firsts Award at the Edinburgh International Drama Festival in 1982.His life-journey is reflected in a documentary film by Sanjay Maharishi and Sudhanva Deaspande in 2005: Gaon ke naon theatre, mor naon Habib( My village theatre , My name is Habib). In 2006 he wrote and directed ' Raj Rakt' based on Rabindranath's Tagore novel Rajarshi and play Visarjan.
