Nationwide Protests Against Sudipto's Killing

Newsclick

Yet another gruesome attack on democratic rights was witnessed in West Bengal which cost a young life.

Sudipto Gupta, a 23 year-old post graduate student at the Rabindra Bharati University, was killed on April 2, when a protest organised by the Students' Federation of India in Kolkata was severely lathicharged by the police. The brutality of the police attack was so severe that even his skull got fractured. Sudipto was brutally beaten up by policemen that led to his death.

The protest was called against a series of moves by the state government to curb campus democracy, the latest one being, limiting the students’ union elections to once every 2 years.

Sudipto's post mortem report said that there were five injury marks on his body, two being major ones found close to his heart and brain. The autopsy's findings nail the lies of the police who said that his death was an accident that happened after "his head got hit against a street lamp post". The family of Sudipto has demanded a CBI enquiry and said that they have no confidence in the state government as the chief minister herself has discounted the killing as a small and petty issue.

A student strike was observed to protest the death of Sudipto Gupta, in West Bengal. Roadblocks were organised all over the state.

Protest demonstrations were observed all across the country condemning the brutal killing of Sudipta Gupta, including at Banga Bhavan in New Delhi, at Benaras Hindu University, at Pune and at Dadar in Mumbai.
