On December 8, Delhi Government revoked the license of Max Hospital at Shalimar Bagh. This was due to a government panel finding that the hospital did not adhere to norms regarding newborn infants. Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain was reported saying, “We have cancelled the license of Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh, the negligence in the newborn death case was unacceptable.”

Delhi police on December 3 sent a notice to the hospital on the issue of medical negligence, following which, the hospital terminated the services of two doctors, Dr AP Mehta and Dr Vishal Gupta on December 4.

On December 5, a Delhi government probe panel submitted its preliminary report to the Delhi Health Minister. The panel found Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh guilty of ignoring prescribed norms before wrongly declaring the death of a premature baby. The baby boy was handed over to the family in a polythene bag on November 30. Minutes before the last rites, the family discovered the baby was still breathing and rushed him to a private nursing home. The baby died on December 5.

Jain also mentioned that, “Max Hospital is a habitual offender and three notices were served earlier to it. And, it has been found guilty in those cases too … Three notices had been issued to the hospital over lapses involving the EWS (economically weaker section) quota patients. The action taken on it is in continuation of the effect of previous notices.”

Max chain has in the past been served notices by the Competition Commission of India regarding excessive profits in sales of disposable syringes.
