India's Incredible Inequalities

Today the top 1% of India owns half of the country’s wealth. The benefits of India’s growth of the past one and half decade have been largely appropriated by this small group. The conditions of the bottom half of the population have seen little improvement. Illiteracy, hunger and malnourishment in India has hardly changed, with India doing worse than less developed countries (LDCs) in many of the critical poverty indicators. The policies that benefit the rich - tax cuts for profits of companies, customs duty exemptions on gold and jewelry - continue. Successive governments are more interested in making policies that enrich the top 1% at the expense of the welfare of majority of the Indians.
